📝 Introduction:
Designing for voice may sound like an audio-first job — but as a Visual & Motion Designer, I know the real magic happens when sound and visuals come together. Voice agents, though powered by speech, still need a face, a rhythm, and a visual presence. That’s where motion design steps in: to give the AI a heartbeat.
In this post, I’ll share how we approached visualizing something as intangible as a conversation — and how motion helped us build trust, clarity, and delight in every interaction with our AI Voice Agent.
🎬 Giving Voice a Visual Identity
When users speak to an AI, they're often unsure what’s happening behind the scenes. Is it listening? Thinking? Processing? Visuals help bridge that gap. We focused on crafting:
Animated waveforms that pulse and respond to speech in real time
Bot avatars with micro-expressions like “listening,” “processing,” and “responding”
Live text transcription paired with elegant fade-ins and transitions
The goal? To make users feel heard, not just listened to.
🎛️ Motion = Meaning
Every animation we designed served a purpose:
Entrance animations to signal availability (“I’m here, ready to chat”)
Idle loops to show presence without being distracting
Response delivery that mimicked conversational flow (slight pause, smooth type-on effect)
We avoided over-the-top visuals. Instead, we embraced calm motion — subtle, intentional movements that build emotional connection without overwhelming the user.
🧪 Designing for Personality
We worked closely with the content and UX teams to make sure the motion reflected the agent’s voice — friendly, clear, and composed. Motion became the body language of our AI.
Quick pulses for enthusiasm
Slower fades for more thoughtful replies
Microbounces to add life to confirmations or greetings
Small things, big impact. Users began recognizing the agent’s mood before it even replied.
🧰 Tools & Process
Our design pipeline included:
Figma for initial layout and component mapping
After Effects & Lottie for micro-animations
Rive & Framer Motion for real-time, interactive elements
Figma Motion plugin for prototyping flows with timing feedback
We also built a Motion Library, a shared collection of animation patterns used across screens for consistency and reuse.
♿ Accessible Motion Design
We ensured every animation supported — not hindered — the experience:
Animations that respected reduced motion settings
Clear visual indicators (like glow or outline) for users with hearing difficulties
Timing that allowed all users to read and respond comfortably
Motion was never just “decoration.” It was functional empathy — helping all users feel comfortable, regardless of ability.

As a motion designer, I sat at the intersection of UI, UX, content, and engineering. Weekly, we:
Synced with devs to ensure real-time render accuracy
Reviewed microcopy to align tone with motion
